Logo for Google Chrome web browser

I’ve seen a number of people talking about how clicking on PDF files no longer works with the Google Chrome web browser. I mainly use Firefox still but I do use Chrome a few times a day and I always have it open.

This seems to be a known issue with Chrome. Here is what Google says about it:

PDFs don’t open automatically in Chrome (support.google.com)

You can normally open PDFs automatically in Chrome by clicking on the file you want to see. If your PDFs are downloading instead of opening automatically in Chrome, Chrome PDF viewer may have been turned off.

Turn on Chrome PDF viewer:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Go to chrome://plugins.
  3. Under “Chrome PDF Viewer,” click Enable PDF viewing.

That should take care of it for you.

If You Are a Website Owner

If you have a website and your website visitors are complaining to you about PDFs not opening on your website and you want to fix it, we have a solution for you. It’s some code you can add to your website and once you add it, people using Chrome won’t have this problem anymore.

It takes less than 5 minutes to complete and you can do it yourself.

If you’re interested in getting this done, let me know.
